Day to Day Itinerary

Kathmandu is a bustling city, which can be postulated by seeing the throngs of houses, jostling with one another, as you get to land in the Tribhuvan International Airport at Kathmandu. At the exit point, one of us will be waiting for your arrival. He/she will welcome you and escort you to your hotel room.

Freshen up properly, and then, you will be introduced to your guide, who will point out all the briefings about the trip. If you have any dilemmas or questions, then feel free to share it with your guide. He is sure to help you. In the late afternoons, if you felt like strolling around, then you may hang out in the markets of Thamel.

Early in the morning, we will catch a short flight (25-45 mins) to Lukla. Upon reaching the Lukla Airport, get your backpacks ready and then, kick-off towards Phakding. For the first few couples of minutes, the trail descends steadily to Choplung and then, begins to hem and haw at several points along the route. As you approach towards Phakding, the outstanding view of Kusum Kanguru peak delights your heart.

Some people proceed up to Monjo; however, it is not a good idea to take such a giant altitude leap in order to minimize the altitude effect. Therefore, we will stay at one of the lodges at Phakding.

Not very far away from Phakding, a beautiful village named Toctoc awaits with a wonderful waterfall cascading down the mighty cliff in several steps. This is an amazing scenario. Again, a few distances ahead, another waterfall could be observed at Bengkar. This place is also famous for its apple pies, which is made using fresh local apple. Then, across the Dudhkoshi, a welcoming hamlet of Monjo arrives opening an entrance to the Sagarmatha National Park (SNP)

After checking-in, the entry to SNP, our path ascends through the serene woods until the Namche. From somewhere in the middle of the woods, the great views of Everest could be seen (in case the weather is clear). Once you cross the jungle, a beautiful Kani Gate and a newly built colorful chorten welcome you to Namche.

For proper acclimatization, no place in the Khumbu region is better than Namche. It is a geographically perfect spot, both in terms of altitude and temperature. Plus, a number of short altitude hikes dissociate from Namche, which is essential for acclimatizing properly in the high altitude.

Today, we will hike either to Khumjung and Khunde or to Thame. In either case, the sceneries are outstanding. The great Himalayan massif has never failed to take its spectators breathes away. The primary purpose of hiking is to ensure proper acclimatization, and Namche is a perfect place to kickstart on a number of altitude hikes. For the night, we will stay at Namche.

From Namche Bazaar, we will follow the right-most trail along the Tenzing Norgay Memorial Stupa towards Phunke Thanga. On the way, there is a beautiful viewpoint offering gorgeous views of the Ama Dablam, Lhotse Shar, Taboche, Kangtega, and Thamserku. Right before arriving at Phunke Thanga, we could see the water-driven prayer wheels by the side of the trail, which is really an amazing glimpse. There is also an army Barrack, but we will go past it towards Tengboche. The largest monastery of the Khumbu region, Tengboche Monastery (Gompa), is just a couple of distance away. Don’t miss out the prayer ceremonies inside the temple.

Relative to the other days, the path to Dingboche from Tengboche is considered to be the most pleasant walk of all times. The mountain ranges- Ama Dablam, Lhotse Shar, Taboche, etc.- are at a constant gaze throughout the trek. For the first few hours, the views remain unchanged; however, as you cross the first suspension bridge at Milingo, we will walk parallel to the Imja Khola until Dingboche. This walk is pleasant in the sense that there are no serious ups and downs. Plus, the views are compelling. On reaching Dingboche, you will notice the Mani walls, which is one of the hallmarks of Dingboche.

After climbing so high, acclimatization becomes absolutely necessary. Speaking sarcastically, mountains may curse you with the altitude sickness if you don’t obey their rules of acclimatization. Therefore, we will stay at Dingboche for the day and follow the acclimatization technique- Hike high, sleep low.

Dingboche is blessed with the sunlight, and because of that, the temperature is warm and welcoming. The interesting part of the Dingboche is its Mani wall, which has an interesting story of origin. Plus, a number of hikes diverge from Dingboche. While most of the people choose to go to the Nangkart Shang Hill, some of them prefer to climb to the Chhukung Ri. However, both places are equally rewarding. Later in the day, we will descend back to the Dingboche for the overnight stay.

Dingboche to Lobuche is also an interesting ride. Within a short walk, we will have to climb up the moraine that offers outstanding views of the hamlets, sustaining at the lower valley. Moreover, the views of the mountains are also outstanding. Many of our trekkers admire the views of the Taboche peak as it appears closer than any other mountains from the top of the moraine. We will walk past Dusa and then cross a suspension bridge at Dughla (Thukla). After Dughla, the path is pretty steep until Lobuche. The views of Nuptse is enticing part of the Lobuche.

Today, before the sun rises on to the sky, we will start our walk because the winds get pretty nasty on the way. But before heading on, make sure you have a good torchlight (headlight preferred) because the path is pretty slippery and dangerous. Cover your face and neck properly so as to prevent being attacked by the cold. From somewhere in the middle of the trek, you could see a black pyramid, standing quite far away dominating the skyline. Don’t stop by and continue your walk until Gorakshep.

As you reach Gorakshep, head on towards the Everest Base Camp. It is a unique experience to be on top of the base camp. From there, everything around appears covered in snow. To be genuine, there are no good views, but the feeling of being on top of the world is strong enough to overpower the rest of the odds. Later, step back to Gorakshep for the overnight stay.

Rise up early in the morning and head on towards the vantage point- Kalapatthar. This viewpoint offers outstanding views of the Mt. Everest and other snowy pinnacles. As the sun slowly mounts over the sky, the snowy milieu turns golden all of a sudden like magic. The linear panorama of zillions of the named and unnamed ranges adds extra flavor to the scenery. It is indeed a majestic experience.

After exploring the Kalapatthar, descend back to the Gorakshep and follow the descending trail to Pheriche via the other way that diverges from the Dughla.

Pheriche to Namche is not so far and arduous journey. We will cross the Pheriche pass (4270 m) and then, walk down the same lane via Tengboche to arrive at Namche Bazaar at the end of the day. Remember that, while descending, the pressure is more on the knees. So, descend slowly.

Namche to Lukla is also a pleasant ride, down the Sagarmatha National Park. The sighting of the Blue Sheep is a well-known fact around this area. This National Park is also an abode for the red panda, but this creature is difficult to encounter because of its shy nature. Once you reach Lukla, it would have been late afternoon or evening.

We will fly back to Kathmandu via the same flight that we have been earlier. Upon reaching Kathmandu, our private would be waiting for your arrival.

Finally, the day has come to return home. But if you wish, you may extend your stay and go for other adventures with the team of Friendly Nepal Treks.

Trekking Date 10th of October to 3rd of November. 2022, Everest Region

Namaste, I have found Santa Bahadur Ghale when I was planning my trip to Nepal. I wanted to do the treks in Sagarmatha/Mt Everest region. I’m very happy I decided to choose Santa, he has an excellent knowledge of the area and understands the skills and capabilities of his customers very well and makes the relevant plans respecting both, the wishes of the customers and the conditions like physical fitness, accommodation to altitudes and others. His communication skills are very good and speaks also very good English. He’s very responsible, very reliable and one can trust his judgment when planning the trips but also when on trails. I strongly recommend anyone to hire Santa directly, avoiding the agencies and useless middlemen. With Santa you don’t get the usual guide/tourist relationship, you can easily become friends and I’m happy to call him a friend. Gabriel -Canada

Great Guide Santa!!!

I personally have a pretty good highmountain practice myself, thanks to my experience of mountaineering in many different countries and I usually walk alone. I would even say I do not like trekking with guides... This time, however, given it was Winter, with all its hazards and risks, I was looking for someone who could trek with me during a month or so. Finding a guide in agencies in Kathmandu could be a real Hobson'schoice. Moreover - you will rarely have any personal contact with your future trekking mate before starting to hike. I met Santa in Lantang Valley, on a December afternoon, two years ago. He was finishing a two-month walk with Richard, an British hiker. I was going up the valley. We had a good time together, talking about Nepal, Nepali people, the Himalayas... The itinerary they had just done was truly impressive. I was eagerly listening to their stories, since it was the first time I was there. Santa speaks good English and we had a great conversation together with him and Richard. will not know anything about his personality or experience before will not know anything about his personality or experience before meeting him. Many guides are too young to have an understanding of their clients, even if they know the region well. Let alone treks ruined by guides constantly playing with their cell phones !… Encouraged by Richard’s stories, I finally asked Santa to accompany me on the Annapurna Circuit as well as the Annapurna Sanctuary. Although his mountain knowledge is outstanding, I was concerned about having to live several weeks next to a man I barely knew. Our guide/touristrelationship rapidly became a real friendship. Santa's discretion, sensitivity, his constant good nature and sense of humor make him an outstanding companion and we had lots of interesting conversations. Thanks to Santa, I got an great opportunity to approach the Nepali culture and better understand his country. Tadeusz Kassatti, Geneva

Santa is very Outstanding guide.

Trekking with a friend in 2016. We managed Santa as our guide for both the Everest Base Camp (3 high passes) trek and the Annapurna Base Camp Circuit. Santa met us at our hotel a few days before to make sure all our national park passes and permits were sorted. Santa took care of all the logistics during the treks and constantly ensured our safety and enjoyment throughout the entire trip. All we had to worry about was getting from point A to B while taking in the beautiful scenery. Santa was very awesome when our plans had to change last minute and for that I am extremely grateful. I cannot recommend Santa enough. He is a kind hearted individual and will do all he can to ensure you enjoy your treks in Nepal. September 2016

The most memorable trekking in our life.

Nov 2019 My wife Ru and I just got home from a 16-day EBC-Cho La Pass-Gokyo Trekking. We are fortunate to have Santa as our guide. Santa has extensive experience in the mountain trekking in Nepal. Very knowledgeable and thoughtful, he is actively planning to meet people's need and tried to enhance the experience of us as much as possible. We will not hesitate to have him and Chakra again if we have more trekking trips in different part of Nepal. They are also highly recommended to our friends and families. 2019

Amazing Nepal, A great guide!!!

Amazing Nepal, A great guide Oct 2018 I went to Nepal as a black, female, solo traveller in Oct 2017 and Santa was my guide for the Annapurna circuit. I contacted some of the frequent posters on these boards and others and Santa’s name came up a few times. Still, it felt like a leap of faith to book a 3 week trip with someone I’d never met before! I needn’t have worried, I had an amazing time (Nepal really is beautiful) and Santa is so experienced I felt that I was in very safe hands. I found him to be kind, patient and good company without being intrusively so. I met plenty of travellers who had decide to do the Annapurna Circuit without a guide. I was glad for Santa’s expertise and thought that that this was well worth the expense.

Excellent guide ever!

lonatravel San Francisco, CA327 contributions Excellent guide ever! Nov 2018 Santa was my guide to EBC/3 high passes in 2015. Everything was arranged smoothly from beginning to end. My international flight was cancelled due to the fuel crisis in Nepal in year 2015. I had to change my flight and itinerary the last minute. I texted Santa while he was in the mountain guiding another client but he managed everything without a glitch. He knew the trek of EBC/3 high passes so well including lots of beautiful side trips. With Santa's help, I finished my trek before scheduled even though I had a little issue with the altitude.
